You’ll never see a superhero movie on here, but a singular vision with some studio backing is fair game. Additionally, we reserve the right to include some films that were produced at studios if they encapsulate an independent sensibility. Note: While some films on this list were released by studios, they were initially developed as independent projects. Of course, a great movie is a great movie, and some of these rankings are unlikely to change as the year goes on. Likewise, the list positions some stellar new releases higher on the list as a means of advocating for them as they become available. Movies that qualified for awards purposes last year but received proper releases in 2018 have been included, but are positioned lower on the list in order to spotlight newer films in the conversation.
